The Ultimate Skin Care Routine for
Combination Skin
What causes combination skin? According to board-certified
dermatologist and esthetician Kavita Mariwala, MD, FAAD, combination skin is
just as common as other skin types. For example, Mariwala says
it's common to have an oily T-zone and dry cheeks.
There is no single cause of
combination skin (it is genetic), but it can change with hormonal and seasonal
changes. As we age, skin can become
drier and less oily as it reacts to hormonal changes. Other hormone-induced
factors that can cause skin changes are periods and contraception. Symptoms of mixed skin A combination of oily and dry
skin can appear in different ways and to varying degrees. There are no strict rules for
what it looks and feels like and can change with weather, lifestyle factors,
and stress. With some observation, you
can figure out how your combination skin presents itself. Symptoms of oiliness may
include: radiant skin large visible holes acne Symptoms of dryness may
include: Controversy redness feelings of stiffness or
roughness Best skincare routine for
combination skin It's a good idea to think
conservatively when deciding on your skincare routine for combination skin. Use gentle products that can moisturize
dry areas without causing excessive oiliness, and apply treatments only to
areas needed for specific issues. AM. a routine Cleanser. It is important to
remove any build-up that has occurred overnight. Toner. Toner removes any oil
that your cleanser didn't remove and balances your skin's pH level. Make sure
to get an alcohol-free toner. Serum. The serum keeps your
skin hydrated and protected. It is best to choose a serum with hyaluronic acid. Moisturizer. For combination
skin, you will need two moisturizers. For dry areas, choose a creamy formula. First formula. Sunscreen. Choose a light
formula with at least SPF 30. To complete. Use mild
products if desired. P.M. a routine makeup remover. If you wear makeup,
makeup remover helps keep the pores open and gives your skin a chance to
breathe. One of the most gentle products to use for this is micellar water. Cleanser. Purify day and
night. A nighttime cleanser should remove any makeup residue other than natural
makeup. Mask for face. Try
multi-masking once a week, i.e. when you apply different masks on different
areas of the face. Serum, treatment, or
moisturizer. Evening time is best for stronger products, so choose moisturizers
rich in emollients for dry areas. Ingredients to consider: Hyaluronic acid is ideal for
your face, as it hydrates your skin without adding greasiness that can increase
oiliness. Salicylic acid can control
oil production and help keep pores unclogged. Lactic acid acts as a mild
exfoliant that removes dead skin cells from dry areas and gently cleanses
pores. Emollients are things like
shea butter and coconut oil that soften dry skin. Antioxidants protect you from
environmental damage. Be sure to choose products containing vitamin C for
general skin health. Be sure to apply sunscreen at night or use products
containing vitamin C to protect your skin from UV rays.
